The Mark Rutherford School

The Mark Rutherford School | Case Study

Client

The Mark Rutherford School is a large secondary school based in the northern part of Bedford, with approximately 1300 students on the roll.

Business Need

Training for teaching staff on leadership skills and approaches as part of the school’s Aspiring Middle Leaders Programme syllabus.

Solution

Two specially tailored in-person training workshops and four 1-2-1 coaching sessions were delivered for each delegate as part of the Aspiring Middle Leadership Programme syllabus. The training supported improving the teaching staff's performance as aspiring leaders and adapting their approach to leading, inspiring, and motivating.

  • A Pre-training design and needs analysis/meeting with Frankie Brown, the Assistant Head Teacher and leader on this project was arranged to understand the programme outcomes and the school’s vision for the training. This would ensure the training was directly relevant to needs and expectations.
  • In-Person Training Delivery: A programme of two interactive in-person training sessions was designed and conducted on-site for the client.  We aimed to provide a relevant training solution that both the participants could use in the working environment immediately and one that the school's senior leaders could see the growth and development of each participant on the programme.
  • Use of the DISC of Human Behaviour model: DISC is the universal language of behaviour.  Part of the training included sharing how to lead and motivate people through the lens of the behaviour model while understanding motivational drivers and innate fears.  By embedding this model within the training, the participants could also gain knowledge of how their leadership style may need to flex to be a leader of people and how to encourage people within their departments and their colleagues in the wider environment of the school to take on board their chosen projects that they needed to implement.
  • One-to-One Coaching:  Coaching is a positive, solution-focused approach that builds lifelong tools, empowerment, and self-awareness.  During these four one-to-one coaching sessions, the participants were coached on building powerful solution-focused thinking to manage challenges and develop performance.  They were also coached on developing leadership strengths, skills or qualities and raising awareness of blind spots.
  • A multi-layered learning experience, including workbooks, handouts, discussions and interactive activities, was specifically designed for this learning experience.   Participants also received feedback on their DISC Leadership Profiles and the opportunity for a post-training review.

"The Mark Rutherford School has worked closely with The Coaching Academy each year since 2020 as part of our Aspiring Middle Leaders Development Programme.   Their training, training resources and coaching sessions have been of excellent quality and tailored to our needs.   The team are adaptable and easy to work with, and after speaking with each delegate who has participated in the programme, they have shared how powerful the DISC personality training workshops and profiles were in the development of leadership skills and self-awareness."

- Frankie Brown, Assistant Head Teacher
